Consulting group A.T. Kearney's 2015 African Retail Development Index ranks the leading current and potential retail expansion destinations in sub-Saharan Africa. Leading the pack is Gabon because of its high rate of urbanization (86%) and high GDP per capita. For its part, Rwanda ranks seventh on the index -- down from its previous year's number one spot. Nevertheless, Rwanda still finds itself in the middle of the index due to its low crime and low corruption. Moreover, though Rwanda's market is small, it is an attractive entry point to the wider East African Community, of which it is a part. Rwanda has little to no formal shopping culture, but the resulting opportunities could be worthwhile for retailers with basic and affordable offerings.
